Brand Protection: Check a Product for Trademark Risk

Pick a product and get a short written review of possible trademark, patent, copyright and counterfeit risks, with a recommendation.

Overview

Insights → Brand protection gives a quick first look at whether a product could run into intellectual property trouble. Pick a product and click Scan, and you get an overall risk level, a score out of 100, findings by type and a recommendation.

Brand protection is part of the Scale plan and above, and needs the permission to edit products.

Scan a product

  1. Go to Insights → Brand protection.
  2. Type part of the product's name or SKU in Find a product, choose it in Select a product to scan… and click Scan.
  3. Read the result:
  4. the overall risk (low, medium or high) and a score out of 100;
  5. Clear to list or Review before listing;
  6. the findings, each with its Type (trademark, patent, copyright or counterfeit), its Severity and a Detail;
  7. a Recommendation.

What the scan reads

The review is written automatically from the product's name, its category and the first 300 characters of its description, and general knowledge of well-known brands and products. It does not search trademark registers, patent databases or marketplaces, and it does not look at your photos.

It is guidance only. Before you act on a legal question, ask a qualified intellectual property lawyer.

Good to know

  • Find a product searches your whole catalogue, drafts included, so you can check a product before it goes live. The list shows up to 100 matches. Partner (Network Search) items are not in it.
  • A product's result is kept for 30 days. Change its name, category or description and the next scan judges it afresh.
  • A store can run up to 30 scans an hour, and each scan counts toward your plan's daily limit for automatically written content.

Troubleshooting

  • "Couldn't run the scan." Try again in a moment. The same message shows when your store has run 30 scans in the last hour or reached its daily limit; in that case try again later.
